Privacy Policy

This policy explains how Vikom Media (“we”, “us”) handles information in connection with the Disk Map app for macOS (the “App”) and the website at diskmap.app (the “Site”). Vikom Media is based in Vancouver, Canada, and is responsible for the personal information described here.

1. What the App does with your files

To show where space goes, the App reads the names, sizes, dates and file-system attributes of the files and folders you ask it to scan. This happens entirely on your Mac. The App does not read the contents of your files, other than the attributes macOS reports about them.

The App keeps the following on your Mac only:

• Scan history: for each place you scan, the sizes of its larger folders and files, by path, from the last 20 scans. It’s used to show what changed since the previous scan, and is stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Disk Map/History (or the App’s container, for the Mac App Store version). Deleting that folder removes it.
• Settings and recent folders, in the App’s macOS preferences.
• Folder permissions (Mac App Store version): the folders you allowed the App to read, kept by macOS as bookmarks so you aren’t asked again.

None of this is transmitted to us or to any third party. We have no way to see it.

Asking an AI agent (only when you choose). If you use Ask AI, the App writes a report of the folder you’re looking at (folder and file names, sizes, dates, space by kind of file, what changed and what the App suggests, but never what’s inside your files) to ~/Library/Application Support/Disk Map/Agent Reports and hands it to the agent you pick, such as Claude, Codex, ChatGPT, Cursor or Grok. The App shows what the report contains before the first time. The agent may send the report to its own service, under that service’s privacy policy. We never receive it.

2. Permissions the App asks for

The download version works without Full Disk Access; you can turn it on in System Settings to include folders macOS protects. The Mac App Store version runs in Apple’s App Sandbox and reads only the disks and folders you choose in an Open panel. These permissions let the App measure files on your Mac. They don’t give us any access to your Mac or your data.

When you move items to the Trash, empty the Trash or delete local Time Machine snapshots from the App, it does so on your Mac, after you confirm.

3. Update checks (download version)

The version of the App downloaded from the Site uses the open-source Sparkle framework to stay up to date. About once a day, and when you choose Check for Updates, it requests a small file listing the latest version from our server, and downloads the update if there is one. You can turn automatic checks off in the App’s Settings.

Each such request, like any request on the internet, carries your network (IP) address, and identifies the App by name and version (for example, “Disk Map/1.0 Sparkle/2.10”). It contains no information about your files, your Mac’s hardware, or you. We have not enabled Sparkle’s optional system-profile reporting.

The Mac App Store version doesn’t make these requests; the App Store updates it.

4. The Site

The Site is a set of static pages. It uses no cookies, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party scripts or fonts, and it has no forms or accounts.

Server logs. When you visit the Site, download the App, or the App checks for updates, our web server records the time, the address requested, the response, and the browser’s or App’s user agent (its name and version). We configured it not to record IP addresses. We use these logs to keep the service running and secure and to count downloads, and keep them for no more than 90 days.

Cloudflare. The Site and update feed are delivered through Cloudflare, Inc., which protects the Site from attacks and speeds it up. Cloudflare processes your IP address and request details to do so, as our service provider, under its own privacy policy. The Site is hosted by DigitalOcean, LLC.

5. The Mac App Store

If you get the App from the Mac App Store, Apple handles the purchase, download and updates under Apple’s own privacy policy. Apple gives us aggregate reports (such as download counts) and, only if you’ve chosen in macOS to share analytics with app developers, crash reports and usage statistics. These don’t identify you to us.

macOS itself may contact Apple to check the App’s signature and notarization when you open it; that exchange is between your Mac and Apple.

6. When you contact us

If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to include, and use it to answer you. We keep that correspondence as long as needed to help you and for our records, and don’t use it for marketing.

7. How we use and share information

We use the limited information above only to deliver and update the App, operate and secure the Site, count downloads, and reply to you. We do not sell or rent personal information, share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, or use it to build profiles. We share it only with the service providers named above, who act on our instructions, or where the law requires it (for example, a valid court order), or to protect the rights, property or safety of our users, the public or us.

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on our legitimate interests in providing, securing and improving the App and Site (for server logs and update checks) and on your request (when you write to us).

8. Where information is processed

We’re in Canada, our server is operated by DigitalOcean, and Cloudflare operates worldwide, so the limited information above may be processed in Canada, the United States and other countries, whose laws may differ from those where you live. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for such transfers, such as the standard contractual clauses our providers offer.

9. Retention and security

We keep server logs for no more than 90 days and correspondence for as long as it’s useful to help you. We protect what we hold with reasonable technical and organisational safeguards: encrypted connections (HTTPS), restricted server access, and collecting as little as possible in the first place. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but the App’s design means the most sensitive information, what’s on your disk, never leaves your Mac unless you send a report to an AI agent yourself.

10. Your rights

Depending on where you live (including under Canada’s PIPEDA and provincial laws, the GDPR, UK GDPR and California’s CCPA/CPRA), you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to get a copy, and to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to or restrict certain processing. Because we don’t record IP addresses or keep accounts, we usually can’t link any server record to you, and hold nothing about you unless you’ve written to us. If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, please tell us first. You may also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, or your local data protection authority.

11. Children

The App and Site aren’t directed to children under 16, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them.

12. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we’ll post the new version here with a new date. If a change would materially affect how the App handles information, we’ll also note it in the App’s release notes before it takes effect.
